About Gripsholm and Mariefred: the back story

Gripsholm Castle stands at Mariefred, on Lake Mälaren, in Strängnäs Municipality. A letter of 1381 shows that Bo Jonsson Grip lived on his estate here; Queen Margareta took it over in 1404, and it has been a crown estate at the disposal of Sweden’s kings and regents ever since, as the Royal Court tells it.
